Hummels Stays Home
Probably my biggest disappointment is not seeing Mats Hummels feature in the final World Cup roster.
Since returning to Dortmund in 2019, the German centerback has never been in better form, and his leadership and experienced would do this side a world of good.
Armel Bella Kotchap - his replacement - is an extremely talented centerback who will have a big future in the German national team dress, but this is a competition where the nation needs performances in the here and now.
A Hummels selection would have shown Germany’s desire to compete for the title, whilst the ultimate selection of Bella Kotchap reeks of a country that is content to simply use this massive stage as an opportunity to bed in the new generation.
