RB Leipzig: The Preview
The Bundesliga season is just a matter of days away, so it’s time to preview every side ahead of another exciting campaign.
Today… RB Leipzig
The Story of Last Season:
After 13 years and 6 seasons in the Bundesliga, RB Leipzig have finally ended their wait for a first major title. The DFB-Pokal triumph in May was a climax for a project started less than two decades ago, but if anything it’s just whetted the appetite for more success in the future.
Under Domenico Tedesco Die Roten Bullen looked stronger than ever in the final months of last season, and their Rückrunde return of 11 wins, 3 draws, and 3 losses was the best record in the entire Bundesliga.
Though they will still go into next season as clear outsiders, the momentum from last season and the continuity they’ve been able to sustain within the squad should give them a strong outside chance of winning the Bundesliga.
The Star Player:
Christopher Nkunku isn’t just the star at RB Leipzig, but in the entire German Bundesliga it’s hard to find a player with more influence on the outcome of matches.
His 20 goals and 15 assists were only bettered by Lewandowski last campaign, and across Europe’s top 5 leagues only Kylian Mbappé and Domenico Berardi also put up 15 goals and 15 assists in their respective topflight.
It wasn’t like Nkunku was profiting off an otherworldly attack though.
RB Leipzig only scored the 4th most goals in last season’s Bundesliga, but Nkunku had a direct hand in 48.6% of these. Not only was this the best value in the Bundesliga, but in all of Europe’s major leagues, only Karim Benzema had a slightly larger hand to play in his side’s success (48.75%)
